For the Baklava Layers
  • 1 package Phyllo Dough Store-bought, thawed properly.
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter Melted.
For the Apple Filling
  • 3 cups Apples Peeled & diced, Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended.
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice Prevents browning.
  • 3/4 cup Brown Sugar Can substitute with white sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Adjust to taste.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg Optional.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
For the Crunch
  • 1 1/2 cups Walnuts or Pecans Chopped.
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup Maple Syrup Honey can be used as an alternative.

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and brush a 9x13 baking dish with melted unsalted butter.
  2. Peel, core, and dice apples, then toss with lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract.
  3. Finely chop walnuts or pecans and mix with a pinch of cinnamon.
  4. Layer 8 to 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the prepared baking dish, brushing each with melted butter.
  5. Distribute half of the apple and nut mixture over the phyllo, pressing down gently. Layer more butter-brushed phyllo and repeat with remaining filling.
  6. Top with an additional 8 to 10 layers of phyllo dough, well-brushed with butter.
  7. Cut the unbaked baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes until golden and crispy.
  9. Warm maple syrup in a saucepan and pour over the baked baklava immediately.
  10. Allow the baklava to rest at room temperature for at least 2 hours before serving.
